MATE (Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences) was established in 1797. It is one of the largest multidisciplinary higher education institutions in Europe, focusing on agriculture. The university was renamed from Szent István University on February 1, 2021.
MATE has five campuses in five cities across Hungary, each with a rich and long-standing history. The Georgikon Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in Keszthely, part of MATE, is the oldest agricultural higher education institution in Europe, established on July 1, 1797.
