Higher education in forestry, a long-standing field of study and the core focus of the university’s education, originates from the institute established for training in mining and metallurgy. The Mining Officer Training School was founded by royal decree of King Charles III, signed on June 22, 1735, in Selmecbánya.
Maria Theresa laid the foundation for academic education with a decree signed on October 22, 1762.
In June 1807, a joint meeting of the Treasury and the Royal Mining and Minting Chamber discussed the establishment of a Forestry School alongside the Mining Academy.
Sopron University continues to focus on education and research, developing its strengths guided by the vision and traditions inherited from the University of West Hungary and its predecessor, the Selmecbánya Academy.
The main goal of Sopron University is to further enhance its research capabilities and promote internationalization. The university aims to offer more study programs taught in English.
